You can make a difference as a Boulder County Parks & Open Space Park Host while riding some of the most beautiful open spaces in the west.  Give back to the trails you love while patrolling, being a uniformed presense, and answering visitor's questions.

ON-GOING VOLUNTEER OPORTUNITIES

Check below and also our "EVENTS" page for specific future needs.
Listed below are some of our on-going opportunities.

Emergency Evacuation Plan
Help establish evacuation plans for the county – involving developing lists of trailer owners willing to respond.

Special Events

BCHA runs several events every year. Each of these events need volunteers to plan, setup, decorate, and otherwise ‘run the show’. We’re also eager to get new ideas about what events would attract our members.

*Volunteers are being organized for our 12th Annual Horse Lovers' Fling on April 5, 2008. This is our big social and fund raising event of the year with our silent auction. Call Jane Kellogg, 303-823-6241 or Barb, 303-776-4907, if you would like to help with the auction, decorating, registration, or other responsibility. It's a grand time for all!

*Volunteers will be needed for the 2008 Public Lands Appreciation Day (PLAD).  Date to be announced.

*Volunteers needed for planning & preparation of the 2008 Fun Show, Oct. 19th, at the Boulder County Fairgrounds!

Horse Services Directory

Approximately every 5 years BCHA produces the Boulder County Horse Services Directory. This publication requires a large amount of research to locate all of the horse-related services in the county, set up distribution channels, etc.
Vjolunteers are needed to update the website Resources Page for barns and organizations.

Trails:  Building & Maintenance

Join our crews several times a year to repair trails subject to heavy use. BCHA built the Dowdy Draw trail in 1986 and has maintained it since. We have adopted the Switzerland Trail across Caribou Ranch near Nederland. Watch for email announcements of other trail volunteer oportunities.

Trail Rides
BCHA hosts weekly trail rides every Wednesday to share our favorite trails with others – please join us! Contact Suzanne 303-485-2162.

Newsletter production

BCHA’s newsletter, The Horse’s Mouth, is published bi-monthly, keeping members informed of local events, activities and issues affecting the horse community. We have needs for volunteers to help write, produce, and mail the newsletters.

Liaison
Spend time with other horse clubs to keep BCHA visible in the horse community, and keep BCHA up on the latest events.

Telephone Committee
Help BCHA stay connected with our volunteers when special opportunities or needs arise.

One-Day Projects with
Boulder County Parks & Open Space 2008

One-Day Projects

Backcountry Forest Restoration on June 21 & August 23 (you can volunteer one or both days)
Work with Boulder County staff at beautiful Heil Valley Ranch, to help restore healthy forest and meadow ecosystems. The work is part of a larger restoration plan that will re-establish natural forest systems and improve wildlife habitat. This project runs from 8:30am to 2:30pm. Snacks will be provided. Minimum age is 12 with adult supervision. Registration deadlines are June 19 and August 21. If you're interested in helping, please contact Matt Bruce at WildWorkVolunteers@BoulderCounty.org or 303-678-6216.

Aspen Habitat Enhancement on June 29
Beat the heat and volunteer for a morning in the mountains of Boulder County. Learn about Boulder County's forest ecology, while working with other volunteers to improve quaking aspen stands on open space near Nederland. Aspen trees and deciduous habitats are disappearing across Colorado for a variety of reasons including fire suppression, ungulate overpopulation, recreation, development, drought and disease. Although, as volunteers we cannot control all of these factors, we can improve our forests by mimicking natural disturbances. Your assistance will help restore aspen forest at Reynolds Ranch by using hand saws and loppers to clear small conifers. Minimum age is 12 with adult supervision. Registration deadline is June 27. This project runs from 9:00am to 12:00pm. To register, please contact Matt Bruce at WildWorkVolunteers@BoulderCounty.org or 303-678-6216.

Collect Native Seed on June 25, July 9, July 22, July 30, August 14, and August 27
Come enjoy a peaceful evening in open space and help collect native seed. Wander through forests and open meadows while carefully looking for and picking viable native seeds from grasses, shrubs, and flowers. Collecting seed by hand is less expensive than purchasing the seed, and ensures that the species is well adapted to local soils and climate. If you enjoy being outdoors and are interested in learning more about native ecosystems and plants, seed collections are a great opportunity for you. Projects will take place on weekday evenings throughout the summer. Plants don't always produce seed on schedule, so keep an eye out for upcoming announcements about new seed collection evenings. Events run from 5:00pm to dusk at nearby open space areas. Minimum age is eight with adult supervision. Please register with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers at www.wlrv.org or 303-543-1411.

Ongoing Opportunities

Calling All Nature Writers
Write an article for the Boulder County Parks and Open Space quarterly publication Images, sharing your knowledge of Boulder County's natural and cultural history. The editor is looking for articles about foxes, moose, fall fishing, owls, soils conservation service, mule deer & white-tailed deer, or the history of the Van Fleet Ranch at Caribou Ranch Open Space. Deadline for the fall issue is July 15. If you are interested in writing an article, please contact Pascale Fried at 303-678-6201 or pfried@BoulderCounty.org.

Team-Building Opportunity
Are you looking for an opportunity for your business, club, troop, or group to work together, outside of the office, while giving back to the community? If so, then maybe you would be interested in participating in a Forest Restoration Project! In an effort to improve plant and wildlife habitat, restore natural forest cycles, and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, the department is enlisting volunteer groups to enhance aspen groves, prepare the forest for prescribed burns, and cut encroaching trees from forest meadows by using hand tools. If this sounds like a great opportunity for your group, please contact Matt Bruce at WildWorkVolunteers@BoulderCounty.org or call 303-678-6216 to arrange a project.

 Happy Trails!
Michael and Amanda
